Strong Basics Still Work
Cyber threats grow more sophisticated every year. AI scams, Business Email Compromise (BEC), and misuse of personal data all pose real risks. But simple, consistent actions remain the best defence. Week four of Cyber Awareness Month is your reminder: get the basics right, and you shut out most threats before they start.
- Use strong passwords and store them safely
A stolen password still sits at the centre of most breaches - even clever AI scams often rely on weak or reused credentials. Long, unique passphrases protect accounts. A password manager keeps them secure, removes guesswork, and stops reuse.
- Always enable multifactor authentication
MFA blocks criminals who gain access to your password. It adds a layer they can’t easily fake or steal like a one-time code, token or biometric check. For business accounts, personal logins and cloud tools, MFA is a simple technical layer that for many attackers, is too much to breach.
- Recognise scams and act fast
Today’s scams use convincing emails, calls or messages. AI can clone voices, mimic writing styles and fake urgency. Stay cautious and Scan for SCAM. Always double-check requests for money, credentials or clicks. Report anything suspicious one quick report can stop a wider compromise.
- Update your software
Many attacks exploit unpatched systems. Updates fix known flaws. Criminals look for outdated systems because they’re easy targets. Automatic updates reduce risk with almost no effort.
Focus on what works
Complex attacks make headlines. But stolen logins, weak passwords, and unpatched software remain the real entry points. The basics still work, and they work well.
